Question:

For this discussion related to human development, complete the following:

Video: Songs about Being a Teenager (Fifteen and Letter to Me)by Elisa Setmire (Youtube)

1) Watch/Listen to the two songs about being a teenager provided in the link above (Fifteen by Taylor Swift and Letter to Me by Brad Paisley).

2) Go on a field trip to a store that sells birthday cards; Hallmark, Target, and Walmart are a few popular places. Once there, you will examine several cards and take notes on the messages and tone of the cards that you read (bring something along to take notes with as you will need your notes to answer the discussion questions). Be sure to look at a minimum of two cards in each of the following age ranges:

Middle Adulthood (target cards for the specific ages of 30, 40, or 50)

Late Adulthood (target cards for the specific ages of 60, 70, 80 or aging in general)

After you have listened to the songs and completed your fieldwork, respond to the following for your discussion posting:

How do the two songs (Fifteen and Letter to Me) incorporate/demonstrate some of the cognitive, social, and/or physical milestones or developmental focuses of being a teenager? Note: Be sure to give specific examples from the lyrics and to incorporate the materials from module 11 in the textbook and lecture in order to receive full credit.

What were the general messages, tone, and focus of the cards in each age range that you examined?

What were some of the attitudes and stereotypes that you observed related to getting older/aging?

If you personally had to be stuck at one age for the rest of your life, what age would you pick and why?
