What role has inspiration played in your own writing

Problem: It's easy to forget how intimately connected with the ebb and flow of real life the process of writing can (some would say should) be. Annie Proulx ("Inspiration? Head Down the Back Road, and Stop for the Yard Sales") describes with loving detail the value of "digging" and random discovery to her writing process. Are her examples personal and relevant only to herself, or is there a more universal applicability here for the rest of us? What role has "inspiration" played in your own writing, and what role should it play?
