In fact, when belonging is missing, students struggle to achieve to their potential. John A. Powell, Professor and head of the Othering and Belonging Institute defines belonging like this: "BELONGING, or being fully human, means more than having access. Belonging entails being respected at a basic level that includes the right to both co- and makes demands on society." In this essay, you are writing an argument to answer the following question: Why does belonging matter in a classroom? How does belonging impact student achievement? How does a culture absent of belonging impact students? Your argument essay will include: An introduction paragraph with a hook, some background information about belonging OR the position from which you are writing, and a thesis statement that clearly answers the question and states what you will write in the body of your essay. Body Paragraphs that include topic sentences which explain what the paragraph is about, evidence from the articles we read that support your topic, and a closing statement that concludes the idea in the paragraph or transitions into the idea in the next paragraph. A conclusion paragraph that re-states the main points in your essay and makes final remarks on the value of belonging in a classroom.
