Problem:
With anything obstacles and barriers will occur for single parents. It is important to project any foreseen obstacles and barriers prior to counseling so an intervention plan can be put in place. One barrier that may arise is as a single parent, schedules are difficult to manage and maintain due to possibilities of children being sick, appointments, and summer vacations from school (Stack & Meredith, 2018). A solid intervention plan would be having resources for affordable childcare, sitters, and summer programs. Additionally, identifying careers that are more flexible or have the possibilities for working from home would allow them more flexibility. Another barrier that can create a difficult path for single parents would be that females make up most single parents, and unfortunately there is still a pay gap for women verses men. With the pay gap and often men are hired over women this can be difficult for the single mom to obtain a financially stable career (Kubiak et al., 2023). An intervention plan for this would include identification of women owned businesses and hiring agencies. Building that report can help them through that process and help them gain confidence. Additionally, explaining the process oflooking up requirements and minimum pay averages is a good tool to add to the tool back so everyone can understand what they should be making at a minimum (Kubiak et al., 2023). Lastly, another barrier may arise if a single parent has a legal history or substance abuse. Current and past legal issues may impact performance or job requirement qualifications.
