Problem:
Due to single parents needing balance with both their careers and parent life; the best career counseling theory would be the social cognitive career theory. Single parents and their career lives will always have the crossovers or influence of one over the other. Therefore, utilizing this theory is best due to the benefits of aiding personal interest development, professional guidance, stability and reliability assessment, career satisfaction, and decision-making processes (Brown & Lent, 2021). For instance, a counselor will be able to guide an individual in determining what their interests are and their priorities. If they cannot currently attend school for a master's degree in counseling due to conflicting schedules, is it a stable or reliable career? Overall, SCCT will examine and evaluate how an individual's cognitive and interpersonal factors, and internal and external influences impact their careers. Therefore, it puts both the fact that individual is a single parent and the fact that the career is on a level playing field in terms of its impact. If one suffers the other will follow (Brown & Lent, 2021). For instance, if a single parent has a child with special needs, she or he may need a career with a flexible schedule or one that allows them to make their own schedule due to multiple appointments. Therefore, this factor would assist the individual with avoiding the stress that would happen if they decided on a career where they had a very restrictive career or traveled often for work.
