What factors determine which level plays a stronger role

Problem

When trying to understand identity it is important to consider our individual characteristics, our family/peer/community/ethnic/racial/etc group, as well as how we fit into the world as a human. These various levels of human identity all play their own respective roles when we try to figure out just who we are. Which level seems to be the most important in forming our identity? Does this change over time? What factors determine which level plays a stronger role? Sometimes it is our own quirks, sometimes we identify as being of a certain ethnic group, and sometimes we appreciate the aspects of ourselves that make us uniquely human. How do we decide which is most important to us at one point versus another? Discuss.
