What do the places have in common

Problem

Both Milgram, in his article "Behavioural Study of Obedience," and Harris, in his article "The Unrepentant Whore," refer to the power of particular places to make us ignore the suffering of other people. What do these places have in common? How do they differ? If certain spaces can make us overlook suffering, is it also possible to engineer spaces that will make us more compassionate? Compare and contrast the locations in these two articles in order to draw some conclusions about how and why certain spaces are able to draw us together and/or pull us apart.
