Assignment: Third Grade Social Skills Group

We are going to discuss developing services on all three tiers, and third-grade social skills groups.

Directions: Pretend you are an SSW at an elementary school, and the teachers have asked that you meet with some students regarding issues of social skills. You've requested a list from all the 3rd-grade teachers and the following are the student's names that came back to you.  Student list:

Amber is cognitively delayed, very kind and "motherly" to the other students (sometimes a little too much to the point of annoying students), feelings are easily hurt when others do not want to play with her, she sometimes gets clingy which also turns the other students away

Marcus has lots of energy, has a hard time sitting still, frequently gets notes sent home due to disruptive behaviors during quiet time such as poking his classmates with pencils and making noises, seems to be well liked by most students

Terrence is a leader in class (mostly positive), gets good grades, helps other students with their work, sometimes is the class clown

Dwayne frequently gets in trouble for verbal and physical aggression towards the other students, has thrown food in the lunch room several times to try to start a food fight, his family has an open case with FCCS due to physical abuse/domestic violence and they have requested for him to get additional support from you at school for his aggressive behaviors

Claire is overweight and gets made fun of frequently by the other students, parents do not seem very involved with her and it's been difficult in the past to get in touch with them

Beatriz is Hispanic and speaks English but not fluently, she seems shy but is well liked by the other girls in class who sometimes argue over who gets to walk with her and stand next to her in line

Melissa gets good grades but has anxiety in some social situations, still sucks her thumb, wears the same clothes a lot and gets made fun of by the other students for it

Lily is adopted and is biracial, has been diagnosed with a learning disability, and her teacher reports that she has made comments about "feeling different" when they were reading books about families, she is new to the school and states she does not have any friends

Ally has chronic medical issues and her attendance is sporadic at school due to being in the hospital frequently, is behind in class work, does not know the other students well

Grant lives with his grandmother due to his mother's alcoholism, is quiet and seems to have a hard time trusting others, doesn't seem to have many friends

Braxton was retained last year due to failing grades, his mother has spoken to you on numerous occasions to get him extra help with academic and social issues, he seems to "fade off" into his own world and has a hard time focusing, refuses to read aloud in class or answer questions when called upon by the teacher, other students call him "dummy"

Luke's family was in a fire and he has extensive burns on his body, has had several plastic surgeries and still needs more, other children seem to be apprehensive in getting close to him and he frequently does not have anyone to sit with at lunch, his teacher really wants him to be in the group

Marguerite has a couple of girl friends who she seems to bully into staying her friends, her big brother is well known in the neighborhood for his gang activity, she gets in trouble for cussing at the teachers and students when she does not get her way stating "I'm going to tell my brother on you!"
