My basic Google search provided me with an article by Way, et al. (2007) that was published in the Psychiatric Services journal. It discusses a study that explores inmate suicides and how those suicides correlate to their time spent in a special disciplinary housing unit in a New York State prison. This study found that in an 11 year period, 32 inmates committed suicide from 1993 to 2003 (Way, et al., 2007). Due to this, Way, et al. (2007) states that a leading cause of suicide within inmates is type of housing, but to note that large amounts of inmates are placed within special housing units and most do not commit suicide. The results of the study suggested that the first two months within the special housing unit should be added as a risk factor and that inmates that have been recently transferred to a special cell should be observed frequently for at least two months following placement (Way, et al., 2007). When suicides did occur, they were found to happen shortly after placement. Lastly, the article offered a suggestion on how to assist correctional officers in keeping an eye on these inmates by installing motion detectors to alert them when an inmate gets out of bed due to hanging by bedsheet being the most common method of prison suicide (Way, et al., 2007). During my TCS search, I discovered a scholarly journal by Smith, et al. (2013) that examined the interpersonal theory of suicide within male prison inmates. This was the first study of the acquired capability for suicide within the overall prison population. Overall, the study found there to be partial support for the application of the interpersonal theory in adult male inmates (Smith, et al., 2013).
