Problem: The article that I found through the Google search was a systemic review for risk factors of suicide in prisons (Zhong et al., 2021). This article is a culmination of other research into one collective paper. The type of paper analyzes other articles that contain similar content to synthesize all available data under one specific question or topic. In this case, it is looking at the factors that are strongly related to suicide risk in prison.
The article that I found through The Chicago School library is a general analysis of the personal accounts concerning suicide from inmates (Jing-ying, 2020). This was genuine research where the methods and results are discussed. There were several inmate interviews conducted and analyzed to determine possible contributing factors and how inmates view suicide themselves.
The key difference between these two sources is one is an actual research project that was started and created by an individual or group. The other one, the Google search, was a review of previously conducted research. These are both types of research, but different ways of conducting them. Systemic reviews focus on a broad concept and the patterns within. It's from a wide range of research, all with different methods and results for the same or similar research question. The other source is one research question and one set of methods to obtain results, not an analysis of several academic sources.
This leads to the second difference, the purpose and outcome of the different forms of research. In Zhong et al. (2021), by identifying the factors that are common among the wide range of studies spanning different countries, specific interventions and policies can be created to target said factors that increase risk. A systemic review allows researchers and other professionals to have a wider understanding of a topic and what is typical in said environment. The Jing-ting (2020) article is more focused on the actual language and conceptualization of suicide by the inmates. By focusing on a singular aspect like this, the article is contributing to the theoretical conversation occurring in the field. This can open it up for new research questions and others can build off of it.
