Transitioning to EVs is clearly a necessity to reduce greenhouse gas emissions worldwide, but mining for lithium, cobalt, and nickel will cause considerable damage. Like fossil fuels, lithium is not renewable; cobalt, nickel, and other metals contained in these rechargeable batteries are also toxic (Luong et al., 2022). Knowing these materials are hazardous, what are the risks of extracting them? The air, soil, and water surrounding these mining facilities are most likely to become contaminated, affecting people, plants, and wildlife (Swanson & Gruber 2022). For example, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) supplies approximately 70% of cobalt, and studies link the local birth defects with mining (Swanson & Gruber 2022). The rush to own electric cars within the next few decades may lead to more environmental trauma without proper planning from the legislature, producers, and manufacturers.
