What forces could possibly hinder creating a single government in the United States? Explain.
The Colonies
The American colonies began as a small enterprise by three groups between 1607 and 1630-Jamestown Settlement, the "Pilgrims" of Plymouth Colony, and the Massachusetts Bay Colony-which in turn split rapidly into multiple communities.
Each of these settlements had unique qualities and characteristics despite the fact that they were "English colonies." Differences stemmed from the colonists socialization experiences-where they came from, how they were educated, and what religious beliefs they adopted.
They also had differing expectations of what they expected the American experience to be-whether settlement was for commercial or lifestyle purposes. As time went on, other colonies were chartered or established. Some were formed from personal land grants given to individuals as a direct gift from the monarch.
Other colonies were immediately under the authority of the monarch. Two colonies were taken from another nation who had already begun settlement and the original settlers remained, adding a different cultural perspective to its social fabric.
All of these factors went into the political organizations they established and how these developed over time. By the time the original thirteen American colonies were completed in 1740 with the creation of Georgia, a colony established for debtors, differing cultures, both political and social, were well rooted.
While there was the overarching "Englishness" in some cultural norms and language between the colonies, independence and association with would create boundaries between them. The following chart indicates the differing cultural norms in each colony that would have been found at the time of the American Revolution.
