Susan Griffin’s Our secret Michel Foucault’ Panopticism
Write an essay that enables you to shape an argument for which Foucault's writing is the basis for explaining and investigating Griffin's writing; through Foucauldian ideas and concepts investigate the ways that people are:
1) fabricated into society; and, 2) impacted by the residuals of an unseen yet persistent disciplinary mechanism. Think of this assignment as a way of bringing the two texts together to speak to the issue of power relationships expressed through language and behavior.
Both Griffin and Foucault write about the fabrication of human life and desire within the operations of history and of specific social institutions the family, the school, the military, the factory, the hospital. Both are concerned with the relationship between forces that are hidden, secret, and those that are obvious, exposed. Both write with an urgent concern for the history of the present, for the ways our current condition is tied to history, politics, and culture. And yet, these are very different pieces to read. They are written differently that is, they differently invite a reader?s participation and understanding. They take different examples from history. They offer different accounts of technologies of order and control. It can even be said that they do their work differently and that they work toward different ends.
