steam engine main parts connecting rod it

STEAM ENGINE MAIN PARTS:

Connecting Rod: It connects cross head with crank on other side.

Crank Shaft: It is output shaft on which the mechanical power which is available for doing work.

It gets rotated because of twisting of crank. The crank is rigidly attached to crank shaft.

Stuffing Box: It is placed at point where the piston rod comes out of cylinder cover. It prevents leakage of steam from the cylinder to the atmosphere.

Fly Wheel: It is given to minimize speed fluctuations or crank shaft. It is keyed to crank shaft.

Eccentric: It is mounted on crank shaft and converts rotary motion of crank shaft   to reciprocating motion of eccentric rod.

Eccentric Rod and valve rod:  The eccentric rod connects valve rod guide and eccentric.

The valve connects guide with D slide valve. The eccentric rod converts the rotary motion of eccentric in to reciprocating motion which is transmitted to the valve through the valve rod.

D slide valve: It controls admission of steam in to cylinder through ports alternatively to act on both sides of piston in double acting steam engine. It is installed inside steam chests and slides over machined surface of cylinder by action of valve rod and eccentric rod.

Port: These are the rectangular openings provided in the cylinder to allow steam inlet and exhaust.
