Steam engine is heat engine which converts heat energy to mechanical energy. The pressure energy of steam acts on piston and piston is moved to and fro in a cylinder. The to and fro motion is then converted to rotary motion by using suitable mechanism. Steam engines find the application in locomotives, drives for process equipment, pump drives, steam hoists, etc.
