My problem statement has evolved as I concentrated more on the specific issue being studied and its significance in healthcare. The current statement is: Although non-invasive positive pressure ventilation (NIPPV) is commonly used for patients with acute respiratory failure, there is insufficient evidence comparing it with negative pressure ventilation (NPV) regarding clinical outcomes, including length of hospital stay, complication rates, and time to extubation, in adult patients (Aiyappan et al., 2025). Previously, my statement was broader and addressed the overall lack of research on NPV in modern healthcare. Feedback and course readings helped me narrow it down to clearly define the population, intervention, comparison, and outcomes, making the study more targeted and practical. This change emphasizes a measurable clinical gap and aligns with a specific research design to evaluate outcomes from different ventilation methods.

Based on this refined statement, I have selected a quantitative research approach. This method is appropriate because the study will analyze measurable relationships between ventilation types and patient outcomes, such as hospital stay duration, complication rates, and time to extubation. Quantitative research is effective when the goal is to test hypotheses and identify relationships between variables using statistical methods (Creswell & Creswell, 2018). In this case, the study will assess whether there are differences in clinical outcomes between the two ventilation methods, using objective measurements and statistical analysis.

Several concepts from this course reinforced my decision to choose a quantitative approach over a qualitative one. One key concept is ensuring that the research questions, framework, variables, and measurements are aligned. Quantitative studies require clear independent and dependent variables that can be reliably measured and statistically analyzed. Since this research examines clinical outcomes typically tracked in hospitals, these variables are suitable for quantitative analysis. Another supporting idea was the importance of design feasibility and data availability. Quantitative designs depend on access to reliable data and clear measures, which are available in many clinical databases. Conversely, qualitative research would be more suitable if the study aimed to explore patients' or providers' experiences with ventilation methods rather than measuring clinical outcomes. Recognizing these differences clarified that my research question is better suited to a quantitative approach that compares outcomes and tests hypotheses (Creswell & Creswell, 2018; Patton, 2015).

Overall, refining the problem statement and aligning the research questions with measurable variables led to the selection of a quantitative methodology. The course's emphasis on methodological alignment, feasibility, and variable measurement strengthened my reasoning for this choice and ensured the study design effectively addresses the clinical research problem.
