As a behavioral health paraprofessional, I may encounter some situations where clients are experiencing financial hardship, but it is still important to maintain ethical billing practices (Corey et al., 2024).The American Counseling Association (ACA) explains that counselors should use a thoughtful ethical decision-making process and consult appropriate resources when faced with ethical dilemmas to ensure decisions promote the client's well-being while maintaining professional standards (American Counseling Association, n.d.). One example of an unethical billing practice would be conducting a counseling session on FaceTime or meeting a client at a coffee shop to avoid documenting or billing for the session. Although I would empathize with a client's financial concerns, providing services outside approved policies could compromise confidentiality and open the door for inaccurate documentation. To avoid this, I would refer the client to my supervisor to discuss ethical options that could be available such as a payment plan, sliding scale fees, or other community resources.
