As a care manager extender, I work with individuals with mental health and substance abuse disorders and honestly, most of them are homeless and looking for assistance with emergency housing. The individuals range from different ages and if they are older adults, they may have youth who are homeless with them as well. The average age at which a teen becomes homeless is 14.7 years old, and teens ages 12-17 are more likely than adults to become homeless (Fryar, 2014). Due to broken ties with biological families, homeless youth often form alternative "families" or networks on the streets. These groups provide emotional support, share survival skills, and offer mutual protection. Homeless youth face systemic challenges such as family instability, discrimination, and of course, lack of affordable housing. These youth or young people are highly vulnerable to physical trauma, mental health issues, and sometimes human trafficking. They are frequently targeted due to their urgent need for basic resources like food and shelter. This can cause high rates of malnutrition, exposure, and untreated chronic illnesses, along with high rates of depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Resources, advocacy groups, and organizations work to raise awareness of these distinct challenges and offer specific crisis care and transitional pathways for young people experiencing homelessness.
