Ethics, by definition, is a reflection on morality as a field of philosophy or theology; the formal study of morality from a variety of viewpoints, including semantic, logical, analytic, epistemological, normative, and applied (ANA, 2015). Even if it is true that no one can do the job of ethical growth for us, it is also true that we cannot do it on our own either (SAU Online, 2013). Ethical growth is a process that involves self-reflection and interaction with the world around you.
In conditions like this, the contributions of communities and groups are absolutely essential. They offer individuals the required support and guidance in order for them to make ethical decisions for themselves. Individuals are more inclined to make choices that are consistent with their own moral beliefs when they're in the company of those who share those beliefs. For example, my parents are both Catholic and educated my brother and me in the faith. Without my parents' direction and instruction, I would be incapable of making decisions that represent what they have taught me. We are taught that each individual is created in the image and likeness of God and that all humans, whether young or old, disabled or healthy, angry or limited in any manner, are sacred and deserve respect (Hoglund, 2013). Having gained this information, I am now in a position to make an informed decision on whether or not to put these teachings into practice in order to improve my ethical behavior or whether or not I will ignore them and maintain the behavior I have developed for myself. Whichever the case may be, it demonstrates that "No one can do it for you, but at the same time you cannot do it on your own" (SAU Online, 2013).
This is essential not only in our personal lives but as well as whom we spend our time. It is easier to live an ethical life when communities hold individuals accountable for their actions. When individuals are intentional toward one another, they create a supportive and encouraging environment in which ethical growth is not only possible but also more likely to occur. This environment allows people to grow in a manner that is consistent with their values.
However, in today's culture, many of the organizations that are supposed to assist us in living in an ethical manner are in a state of chaos. Mangalwadi provides an excellent example of milkmen in Doorn, Holland, who are true and honest since the bible taught the people of Holland that, unlike the people of India, nothing is hidden from God's sight (Mangalwadi, 2011). The people of Holland are freed from corruption by the teachings of the Bible, which are shared throughout the society. The collapse of religious institutions and the rise of selfishness have all led to a society that is less equipped to promote ethical growth. The absence of strong communities makes it challenging for individuals to live morally and can result in a moral decline in society.
