Problem

Jane (an 8th grade student) discloses to Ms. Jay (a teacher) that her mother has been physically abusive. Ms. Jay observed bruises on her arm and scratches on her temple. Ms. Jay immediately reports this information to Principal Bell, who then refer her to the guidance office for support. Ms. Jay brings Jane to the office and approaches the guidance counselor, Ms. Em. She then discloses the information shared by Jane. Ms. Jay then asks her to call ACS and file a report. Ms. Em asks to be excused and finds you (The Director of Guidance) to seek support. Ms. Em is uncomfortable making a report for a third party. Ms. Jay feels intimidated about ACS calls and states she's "never done that before and is not sure what to do; that's why we have counselors."

What problems immediately stand out to you? How do you support Ms. Em and Ms. Jay? What is your directive? What are your next steps?
