Assignment task:
In Week 4, you will focus on writing that contributes to your career goals. Professional networking can be used in conjunction with writing skills to create inroads to a variety of careers. If written communication is applied effectively, networking skills can secure employment or leverage connections at work to gain a promotion.
This week you will demonstrate your written communication skills by composing a cover letter and doing informal research on the intended audience for that letter. Writing to secure a job can be intimidating, but there are many resources to help you succeed. You'll use this opportunity to advocate for yourself in a situation where it is likely many other people are applying for the job. Think about how you will stand out from the crowd and convey interest in the company.
1. Watch "Professional Writing" and respond to the questions (approximately 20 minutes to view the video and respond).
2. Review Career Field Writing Preparation Resources (approximately 20 minutes).
3. Review Cover Letter and Resumé Resources (approximately 30 minutes). These resources are intended to help you prepare for your summative assessment.
4. Read the selection from Part 6, "An Anthology of Readings,"f The Writer's Mindset.
5. Read the selection from Part 7, "Handbook of Reading and Writing Skills," (1 page) of The Writer's Mindset.
6. Read 4 articles from the University Library.
7. Watch 2 videos (approximately 30 minutes) from the University Library.
8. Complete the Journal Entry assignment. This activity is intended to give you practice writing, so there is no wrong way to approach the journal. Remember, you do not need to submit your journal, but you do need to submit a short summary of what you wrote about in your journal.
9. Complete the Summative Assessment: Cover Letter and Reflection. This assignment allows you to construct a piece of writing appropriate for a career-specific situation.
10. Respond to the discussion about credible research and complete your follow-up responses throughout the week.
