Clinical mental health counseling versus school counseling really brought to light for me how influential professional organizations are on our field. Counseling organizations such as ACA and ASCA set ethical standards and help advocate for counselors, while CACREP ensures our counselors are trained adequately before entering the field.
I think CACREP standards are important because they create some uniformity. Regardless of where you graduate from, you will have been trained in certain foundational skills such as ethics, assessment, multiculturalism, etc. Now I don't think that just because someone has these skills in their toolbox that they're prepared for all situations, but it seems like a good start.
Licensure is another way we as counselors are screened to make sure, we can competently care for our clients. Each state has different requirements but requires education, hours of supervision, and passing a state exam to practice on your own. Looking at credentialing organizations, code of ethics, and training standards it all started to click on how there are so many things in place to protect our clients.
