Using the advertisement you plan to write about in your Ad Analysis essay, do the following:
i. Identify the implied claims. Identifying claims will help you understand how advertisers are trying to appeal to potential customers. Remember, some claims with be obvious ("This product is better than the rest.") and some are subtle ("Men who are worried about cleaning are not masculine.") Your papers will deal with the subtle claims, so focus your response on these claims. You are basically trying to find the warrants of the ads. Your paper will focus on subtle claims concerning social issues, so analyze those types of claims in this discussion board. Tell your peers how you know the advisers are claiming these things (offer evidence and examples, in other words). You might want to use this template: This ad claims______ about ________.
ii. Identify the target audience. How would you analyze the type of person that these ads appeal to based on the claim and type of ad? What clues do you have leading you to believe this is the target audience? Be as specific as possible. Remember, an ad is rarely pitched to "everyone". Who is the specific group? How do you know?
