Problem:
Respond to the following students
Student 1: Based on the observation of the student it was observer a relationship with attention and self injurious behavior. This information in not enough to determine the correlation between the two because it doesn't provide enough information. For this behavior it recommended to observer the persons that are present, the consequence and antecedent, the places and collect ABC data. It's common in SIB behavior to have access to attention because the therapist or the person how is intervening in the behavior need to maintain the safety of the client. Need Assignment Help?
Student 2: When looking at behaviors like SIB in a setting it can be determined that if the behavior is happening 100% of the time when it is reinforced by attention. We are seeing that behavior in one context. It would be important to get a report from the clients care givers as to when they see the behavior occur. And trying to not give this behavior any attention is difficult because we want to stop the behavior before they can cause harm to themselves so taking away attention is difficult.
Student 3: While self-injurious behavior can be maintained by attention, there are other functions for SIB and should not be ruled. The BCBA needs to look at the antecedents. If in a school setting, the work being given could be too hard and be causing some frustration that can lead to SIB. If that is the case and the child is getting attention and the work being taken away it could be escape. Due to the immediate reaction from adults, it could start out as work being too hard and then once the student receives attention, that could be an additional function. I think there would need to be further investigation to the antecedents, but also, with the severity of SIB, it needs to be treated quickly. I've personally seen this happen this year and both times when the student's placement was changed to POR or self-contained where the work was easier, the SIB disappeared.
Student 4: SIB have a high correlation to attention because SIB requires immediate intervention. This does not mean that a person is engaging in the behaviors to gain attention, there the correlation does not necessarily mean that there is a contingency between the two. The behaviors need to be further assessed to determine any factors that may be contributing the behaviors.
