Write an 8-10 page paper on an existing policy that relates to an area of interest (i.e., children and families, elderly, substance abuse, etc.) within rural, small town communities, and/or faith-based practices. The purposes of the paper are: 1) To give you an opportunity to become informed about an area of social policy that is either new to you or that expands your knowledge of policy in your area of practice interest; and 2) To give you the opportunity to practice analyzing a policy. The policy may be at the federal, state, county, municipal or agency level.
Note the following expectations:
1. Include a minimum of 10 references (at least five must come from peer refereed sources)
2. What is the social problem as it relates to your area of interest that you have chosen.
3. Provide a historical background of the policy identify and describe the policy measures initiated to address the problem. (history of attempts to solve the problem)
4. Discuss whose agenda is really being met by this policy. (Winners and losers)
5. Present your critique of the policy as it relates to its effectiveness and
6. Advance an alternative policy proposal in the face of any ineffectiveness or inefficiency identified in the existing policy.
NOTE: Be sure to analyze the policy using one of the policy analysis models from your readings and class discussions. e.g. Rational Approach, Conservative Approach.
