The cardiovascular system is responsible for maintaining life by ensuring continuous circulation of blood throughout the body. Its major functions include transporting oxygen from the lungs to the tissues, delivering nutrients from the digestive system, and carrying hormones to target organs. It also removes carbon dioxide and metabolic waste products so they can be excreted. In addition to transport, the cardiovascular system helps regulate body temperature, maintain fluid and pH balance, and protect the body through immune responses and blood clotting mechanisms (Tortora & Derrickson, 2017). Coronary artery disease (CAD) and arteriosclerosis/atherosclerosis are related but distinct conditions. CAD affects the coronary arteries, which supply oxygen-rich blood to the heart muscle. When these arteries narrow due to plaque buildup, the heart receives less oxygen, which can result in chest pain or a heart attack (American Heart Association, 2023). Arteriosclerosis is a general term describing stiffening or thickening of the arteries that occurs with aging. Atherosclerosis is a type of arteriosclerosis in which fatty plaques made of cholesterol, calcium, and cellular debris accumulate inside arterial walls, narrowing them and reducing blood flow (Libby, 2021).
