New media history paper

Topic: New Media History Paper

Description:

Using art sources from the lectures and the readings discuss the ways artists have used new technology to create new forms of art, create tropes that are used for commercial purposes (film, screen designs, graphical interfaces), and the ways in which technology advances creative practice. Note the emphasis on the dematerialization of the art object. Does art become a commodity and profit the artist, gallery, museum, in new media? If it does describe the strategies artists employ to create profit. Discuss the way the data base of the internet has been used by contemporary artists through appropriation to create new work—recall that artists use material that has been made public from weather forecasts, to airplane tracking, to surveys, product review sites, and curatorial practice and collection of freely published material by the general public. Does the ability of anyone to make “art” this way result in a flattening and similarity between the amateur public – aka Meme viral phenomenon? If this is true does this effect make it more difficult for artists working in new media to “stand out?”

The midterm paper will be 5 pages double spaced (1250 words) and may include images or illustrations.

Please choose MLA or Chicago Style formatting for your paper and its citations. You MUST include 5 citations from the readings.

Manovich “New Media User Guide,” Paul “Introduction to Digital Art,” Lovejoy “The Machine Age and

Modernism,” Lovejoy “The Electronic Era and Postmodernism,” and Manovich “Vertov’s Dataset.”

You MUST also include material from the lectures as citations. You may also include citations from your own research. These latter citations should come from course readings, the course web site, or lecture material–please no Wikipedia, personal narratives, etc.

Avoid: Inflating your paper by using lengthy quotes from the readings as citations is frowned upon.

When using material from the readings as a citation you should re-state the point so it supports your argument and then cite the source as support for your analysis. Citations from Wikipedia will not be considered. We like illustrations, but do not inflate the paper with illustrations. The final page count is less relevant than the final word count of 1250 words or more.

Do: Quality writing is not an ambiguous event. It can be defined by the flow of the material. Flow is directly related to clarity about the material you present and sentence structure. Read your paper out loud –as if it were a speech– and you will easily and quickly find areas where the writing does not flow. link to all the resources and readings
