I do think that women should be able to keep their newborn infants for a while with them while they are in prison. Since it will then allow the mother and child to have that early child-mother bond that is really important within the early stages of life. I do think newborns should be able to stay with their mothers, but getting to around the early toddler age, they should be placed in the placement of a close friend or family member. But I do think it is really important that the children see their mother and develop a lasting relationship with their mother. And giving mothers about the first 6 months to a year or life devoted to an infant can help not just the child but also the mother grow. The state of Minnesota passed the Healthy Start Act, which permits the Commissioner of Corrections to place pregnant people and people who have recently given birth, an alternative to prison during the first year of the child's life. It allows the parent and child to bond during that time, and also receive drug treatment, counseling, and other services (Smykla 2020, p.292). I think the benefits of mothers keeping their infants while they are in prison outweigh the risks, especially if they are given the care that they need. I feel like the only risks could be the prisons not giving them applicable care, such as doctors' appointments during the pregnancy, and getting the newborn proper care as well. But I do think children should be with their mothers during the first year of their life, so that they can develop that attachment to their mother. I also think a mother in prison could benefit from this as well. Developing new skills that can impact them positively within prison. Need Assignment Help?
