Monitoring trends of nutrition levels including obesity

Problem:

Reply to this post (One public health concern that uses epidemiological methods is childhood nutrition and obesity prevention. Using data collection and surveillance can be used to monitor trends of nutrition levels including obesity. In 2010, the U.S. Congress passed the Healthy, Huger-Free Kids Act (HHFKA). This bill was passed to improve nutritional standards of meals served in public school that participated in the National School Lunch Program and the School Breakfast Program. Under HHFKA, nutritional standards increased by requiring schools to provide more fruits, vegetables, whole grains and low-fat dairy options. Since the targets school-aged, low-income and it's primary health issue this policy addresses in childhood obesity (U.S. Department of Agriculture [USDA], 2014). A 2020 study reviewed the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act to see if this policy did help reduce childhood obesity. Using data from the National Survey of Children's Health and surveying children age 10-15 across all ethnicities and socio-economic statuses. While the study could not definitively state a causal relationship between HHFKA and childhood obesity prevalence, it show that there was a decrease in obesity in students who participated school lunch programs (Kenney et al., 2020).
