In book ii of the republic socrates suggests banning poetry

In book II of the Republic, Socrates suggests banning poetry in his ideal city, unless it has first been approved by the censors. His goal with this is, as with all actions in the ideal state, is to create justice within both the individual, and within society. How do you feel about this and why? As a pragmatic example, I could use my children. I censor what they watch, so that it is not too violent or graphic in nature. Is this any different?
