Identify patterns of behavior and antecedent conditions

Problem: Indirect assessment procedures included structured interviews and rating scales designed to gather information from individuals familiar with Johnny. Parent Interview: Johnny's parents were interviewed to identify patterns of behavior, antecedent conditions, and consequences occurring in the home environment. Parents reported that Johnny frequently engages in self-injurious behavior when preferred items are removed or when he cannot communicate his needs effectively. Teacher Interview: Johnny's classroom teacher reported that SIB most frequently occurs during transitions to academic tasks or when Johnny is denied access to preferred toys. Functional Assessment Screening Tool (FAST): The FAST questionnaire was administered to Johnny's teacher and parents. Results suggested that Johnny's SIB is most likely maintained by access to tangible items and possibly automatic reinforcement. Purpose of Indirect Assessment: Indirect assessments provide valuable information about possible behavioral functions and environmental conditions associated with behavior, although they must be confirmed with direct observation (Steege et al., 2019).
