How social media transformed political-social landscape

Problem:

It has become clear in recent decades that social media has transformed the political and social landscape of the United States.  Some of you are probably looking at social media right now as you read this.  Social media has had a number of net positives, allowing political figures direct links to supporters and allowing normal citizens to have more awareness of policy initiatives and legislation.  However, most of the focus on social media in democracy tends to be on the negative, with conspiracy theories spreading online faster than ever before and people's worldviews being shaped and reinforced by what the digital space feeds them.

Given the real world consequences that social media can have, do you think social media is bad for democracy?  If so, why?  If not, why not?  In our increasingly connected world, is it possible to remove ourselves from social media and its effects on democracy? Be very brief. Need Assignment Help?
