Diagnostic criteria for generalized anxiety disorder

Problem:

After evaluating the information gathered during this assessment process, the diagnostic criteria for Generalized Anxiety Disorder would be considered when examining the client's presenting symptoms. The client reports racing thoughts, difficulty concentrating, sleep disruption, and physical symptoms such as a pounding heart. These symptoms suggest excessive anxiety and physiological arousal that are commonly associated with anxiety disorders. According to the Diagnostic and Statistical manual of Mental Disorders (5th ed., text rev.), individuals with Generalized Anxiety Disorder often experience persistent worry along with restlessness, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, irritability, muscle tension, or sleep disturbance (American Psychiatric Association, 2022).

However, additional assessment would still be necessary before confirming a diagnosis. The DSM-5-TR specifies that symptoms of Generalized Anxiety Disorder must occur more days than not for at least six months (American psychiatric Association, 2022). Since the client reports symptoms lasting only three days, the clinician should gather more information about stressors, symptom duration, and functional impairment. A comprehensive assessment would also help rule out other conditions such as panic disorder, situational stress, or substance-related causes. Need Assignment Help?
