How relationships and consistency affect student success


Problem:

After working in a special education classroom, I have gained valuable insight into how relationships and consistency affect student success, both of which are crucial when navigating classroom management. Now, classroom management can change from classroom to classroom, which can be a challenge. I have found that setting clear expectations for the class and implementing routines. It is also important to keep all staff in the loop of individual student expectations as well as classroom expectations. Taking breaks in a special education classroom is essential for success, whether that's in the sensory room, on the sensory path, or with a quiet activity at the student's desk. While working in a special education classroom, it is also important for staff to take breaks as well, so that students and staff may be regulated. Building relationships with students can help prevent certain behaviors. If behaviors occur, it is important to remember to stay calm, as raising your energy level will also increase student reactions (ASCA, 2022). It does take time to figure out what classroom management skills work best for your class. Some may work well, others not so much. In most classrooms, raising one's voice, making threats, and bribery are all strategies that can negatively affect students. Although every student responds differently, they may become overwhelmed when a teacher yells. Making threats, for example, "if the class does not quiet down, we are not going on the field trips,".
