In my early years (birth-14 years old), my father worked, and my mother stayed home with us, her children. In my family of origin, I watched as my parents did a pretty good job of achieving equality in their relationship and in their home, operating between a traditional couple and also a postgender couple (Mahoney & Knudson-Martin, 2009). In my family of origin, my father worked outside the home, mainly, with some chores inside the home. My father was a masculine man who fixed things, did the yard work, cooked, provided financially, and played sports with us boys. My mother stayed home and was a soft and emotional nurturer. She cooked, cleaned, provided emotionally and spiritually, and tended to my dad and her children with love and tenderness. My family can definitely be explained by the Social Learning Theory, as this theory describes how children develop through their social environment and how the children observe and imitate others (Delaney, 2017). An example of this in my family of origin is that masculine traits are courage, strength, power, and drive, and my brother and I imitated these gender social norms in our lives. Examples of femininity are beauty, sensitivity, empathy, and nurturing, which my mother and sister are.
