Our recent readings have covered the experiences of immigrants and the challenges they faced becoming Americans. Besides the obvious obstacles of language and culture, the issue of racial stereotypes complicated their adjustment. Discuss the ways the principals in the texts had to fight the inaccurate characterizations thrust upon them. Stereotypes have the power to damage and destroy individuals.
Select two essays and discuss the ways stereotypes created false and limiting images of people who were accomplished. (You should use examples that are similar.) Explain and use details to show how the individuals had to deal with the expectations of people who knew nothing about them. There are supporting readings also containing historical information that reveal some of the origins of the racists stereotypes. Make sure you review all of the reading and related videos.
