At the age of 13, Gandhi got married to a girl the same age. During their marriage they had four children. In 1888, Gandhi went to London to study law, and he returned to India in 1891 to become a lawyer. Two years later, he went to South Africa to work. After working 13 years in South Africa, he saw how Indians were discriminated against in that country. He started a nonviolent protest against the government. He wanted everyone to be treated equally. In 1913, he was arrested and jailed after leading 2,500 Indians in a nonviolent demonstration in South Africa. After his time in jail, he went back to his native country and began to work for the people of India.
