Problem:
In 150 to 200 words respond in a substantive way, encourage further dialogue and discussion and encourage your classmates to think about other aspects of the topic.
When it comes to these topics it is very important issues to talk about. Cannabinoids and opioids significantly affect mental health, physical health, relationships, and daily functioning. I think these issues where individuals are using cannabis recreationally and medically are more common in todays society. They use these substance as more of a coping mechanisms and can lead to misuse and addiction especially in opioid usage. I think a big issue surrounding this topic is the stigma behind the type of person who normally uses this substance. The stigma behind opioid users are normally characterized individuals as irresponsible, dangerous, weak, etc. In addiction cannabis users are overly judges and minimized usage because marijuana has become more accepted in society. When talking about opioids we know and they have been proven to be a highly addictive drug. On the other hand cannabis is not classified as an addictive drug. This is interesting to me because I think if someone needs a substance to perform daily tasks like going out in public or eating it would be considered addictive. I've known multiple individuals who can not eat or sleep with out cannabis in their system. That to me proves how it can be an addictive drug. Let alone how the drug is consumed can be harmful physically as well many people smoke cannabis which affects the lung. After this weeks course material it really shown me how I feel these types of drugs as well. When I think of opioids I think of the case with OxyContin and how it affected so many people as well. This stigma that is creates with these drugs and my options even can negatively affect therapeutic relationship if me as a counselor approached it with this bias. When reviewing the course work I saw that use often overlaps with anxiety, depression, trauma, chronic pain and many other things. I think it is important to remember the WHY these clients started these drug and then work from their instead going into the session with a stigma on their character based on their substance use. Client may go into therapy session already having a sense on feeling judge and having to be defensive by their actions. Which can make them withheld information or avoid certain treatments. An effective counseling approach with individuals that use cannabis or opioids requires nonjudgmental and person-centered. They need to have trust in the process and feel safe to open up about there experiences. They are being judge by the society everyday they need to have a place where they feel safe.
