Assignment: Write a 2 to 3-page reflection essay based on ONE of the videos posted below.  Reflect on applicable theories from one or more Chapters in Module Three in your online textbook and explained further in posted videos in Module Three.  Use this as an opportunity to enhance your personal learning strategy tailored to your current life situation by focusing the communication you use and encounter in personal relationships.  Utilize a minimum of FIVE specific terms from the readings and videos provided. Cite page number references and video timestamps in parentheses after using each term to support your observations and connections.  This approach will help you apply interpersonal communication concepts as a form of "self-help" while you learn, study, and understand theories.  Bold the terms for easy identification.

Instructions:

1. Watch all four of the posted videos.

2. Select ONE video that resonates with you in your life today and use the information contained in the video along with your readings to learn strategies for improved or different communication approaches.

3. Answer the prompt that corresponds to the video you selected. Remember to utilize a minimum of FIVE terms you have learned in this module to support your thinking and feelings.

4. Write Your Reflection by following the same formatting used when writing your Reflection #1 in the Orientation section of Moodle.  Below, you will see a basic outline to guide you through the critical thinking process and to compose a coherent and meaningful reflection paper.

  • Introduction Paragraph: Begin by briefly introducing the video you have selected and explaining the main points of the video for improved interpersonal communication behaviors. Briefly connect these main points to your personal situation to make the paper relevant to you, specifically. Need Assignment Help?
  • Body Paragraphs (at least 3): Provide a detailed explanation of one or more theories from the module and their key concepts. Explain how each theory applies to your current life situation and personal learning strategy, focusing on one-to-one communication in a particular context or setting. Provide specific examples of how you can implement these theories to improve your interactions in personal relationships on the job, at work, in the classroom, at home, or on a date, etc. Use and cite at least FIVE (5) specific terms from the textbook readings and bold the terms for easy identification. Use proper citations for each term you reference from the textbook by citing the section number or from one of the videos such as: self-actualization (Chapter 1, Fig. 2.1.1) or (Rogers' Self Concept video, timestamp 1:03).
  • Conclusion: Summarize your key insights and how you plan to incorporate these theories into your ongoing personal and professional development, particularly in the context of one-to-one communication.

Additional Concept to Consider for Your Critical Thinking:

  • How has being mindful (or lack thereof) affected your communication and relationships?

After watching Dr. Marisa Franco's TED Talk, "Why Friendship is Just as Important as Romance," why does she emphasize the need for effort and intention in maintaining friendships? Based on the theories or practices discussed in the textbook, what strategies can you implement to cultivate and sustain meaningful friendships in your life? How might these strategies also benefit your other interpersonal relationships?

After watching Mr. Chong's TEDTalk (15:11 min) about "How to deal with toxic family relations", consider how cultural or social factors might influence the way toxic family relationships manifest and are handled. How do your cultural background or social environment shape your views on family relationships and communication? How do the principles of mindful and respectful communication, as discussed in class, be applied to manage and navigate these kinds of relationships?

Consider how Dr. Don Heider's discussion (13:10 min) of anonymity, digital footprints, and the consequences of online actions relates to the communication principles we've discussed in class, such as responsibility, transparency, and the impact of mediated communication. How do these ideas influence your perspective on digital communication?

After watching Mr. Jackson Katz's TED Talk (17:41 min), "Violence against Women - It's a Men's Issue," reflect on a time when you witnessed or were aware of gender-based violence, harassment, or harmful behavior. How might the principles Katz discusses have changed the situation? How can you apply what you've learned in your own life and interactions to contribute to a more respectful and equitable environment?
