I think gender roles are something we learn over time rather than something we are simply born knowing. From my perspective, they develop through a mix of family influence, social experiences, culture, and observation of the world around us.
According to Feldman (2014), gender development begins early in childhood when children start forming their gender identity, or their understanding of whether they are male, female, or another gender identity (Chapter 6). As children grow, they develop gender constancy, meaning they realize gender stays consistent over time. I found it interesting that once children understand gender categories, they actively look for clues about how they are supposed to behave. I think this explains why young children often imitate parents, siblings, or characters they see in media who share their gender.
Feldman (2014) also explains that gender roles are strongly shaped through social learning, meaning children learn behaviors through modeling, reinforcement, and observation. I personally see how subtle reinforcement plays a role, for example, when certain behaviors are praised or discouraged depending on whether they match traditional gender expectations. Even small comments or reactions from adults can influence how children understand what is "acceptable" behavior.
In middle childhood, peers begin to have a stronger impact on gender role development (Chapter 7). Children often want to fit in, so they may follow group norms related to gender in order to feel accepted (Feldman, 2014). I think peer influence can sometimes reinforce stereotypes, even when families encourage individuality. Media and culture also contribute by repeatedly showing certain ideas about masculinity and femininity.
Personally, I believe gender roles continue to change as society evolves. I think understanding how gender roles develop is important because it helps us recognize that many expectations are learned, which means people should feel free to express themselves in ways that feel authentic rather than limited by stereotypes.
