Case study:

Taylor and Kyle have been partnered for 13 years and have been talking about having children. They have sought out the services of a surrogate agency that has connected them with an egg donor and surrogate mother. They have been talking about this for some time but now Kyle is having “cold feet.”  He is questioning his ability to be a good father and the impact a child will have on his life.  This has caused some tension in their relationship and they have come to you for counseling.

What approach would you use with helping this couple?

For the assignment please consider the following:

(These do not need to be answered but may be used as part of the dialogue)

Gays and lesbians are often analyzed in society as a way of better understanding them. The following questions are often asked to gays and lesbians but have been modified for non-gay people. How do you think non-gay people would feel if they were constantly asked these questions?

1. When and how did you first decide to be non-gay?

2. What do you think caused you to choose to become non-gay?

3. Is it possible that your being non-gay is just a phase and that you will grow out of it?

4. Is it possible that your being non-gay stems from a neurotic fear of others of the same sex?

5. If you’ve never slept with someone of the same sex, isn’t it possible that you just need a good gay experience?

6. There are a lot of depressed non-gay people.  Why don’t they try to get therapy to become gay?

7. Why do non-gay people put so much emphasis on sex?  Why do they have to flaunt their lifestyle in public?

8. Do you consider it safe to expose your children to non-gay teachers?  After all, the vast majority of child molesters are non-gay.

9. Non-gays are only interested in sex and not relationships.  Look at the high rate of divorce among non-gays.

More food for thought: The term homosexual and heterosexual is really not an accurate description for people and should not be used.  These terms only address sexual attraction and not the emotional, psychological or spiritual attraction that gays feel in their relationships. Imagine being told that non-gay couples have nothing more than sexual attraction for each other. This would be a limiting description of their relationships. Sexual orientation as a term is also limiting. This assumes that there is only a sexual attraction.  Affectional Orientation is the preferred term by some.  In professional papers or presentations you would not use homosexual or heterosexual.  You would use gay, gay males, lesbians, and non-gays.
