A potential complication refers to the possibility that something untoward can happen in a situation. A potential complication is a happening or event that can result in an adverse reaction that aggravates or worsens the current status of the patient. Potential complications make matters worse;, they move patients in the wrong direction. Rather than improving, potential complications can result in the patient not progressing or even result in the patient's condition getting worse.
Potential complications are possible for most patients receiving nursing care. Predicting potential complications is a major responsibility of the nurse and requires skillful use of clinical judgment competencies. Nurses must consider potential complications that commonly occur for all patients facing a similar situation, as well as those that might occur based on an individual patient's unique.
