Case Study:
Power, in organizational terms, can be defined as the amount of plausible and result yielding influence one has on a person, position or any other organizational factors. Power is a fickle thing as both under use and overuse of power is dangerous. There are namely four major sources of power namely Expert, Coercive, Legitimate and Referent.
Expert Power:
This kind of power is attained having a deep and highly unique knowledge on the subject at hand. Information and the singular knowledge on that subject with proved past events which certify the same is the source of Power in this case.
Elon Reeve Musk, CEO of SpaceX and Tesla Motors currently working on affordable space travel service for humans in future, with his sheer expert power and expertise on the subject was able to rally all the potential future space travel based businesses to his side to work as a singularity
Coercive Power:
This power is attained by being in the position to root out mistakes and wrongdoing and punish for the same. The major source of power in this case is the fear of the opposite party of getting punished.
Donald Trump, Presidential nominee of the Republican Party, is using his ability to use Coercive power on all the sidelined public issues if elected. His agenda is ruthless and Coercive.
Legitimate power:
This power is attained by the virtue of the position or the title. The source of power comes from the perks and special privileges one has due to that position.
Barack Hussein Obama II, current president of U.S, is well known for his bold and fearless actions and policies against terrorists and wars, has his source coming from his position. His position gives him the privilege to take any measures to curb the current problem
Referent Power:
This kind of power derives from the respect or admiration one gathers because of attributes like personality, integrity, interpersonal skills etc. Ethical and cooperative behavior is the root source of this power.
Hillary Clinton, presidential nominee of Democratic Party has managed to muster positive response from the vote bank and the power to do this came to her due to the trust people have on her integrity, open personality and interpersonal skills.
