Problem:
The key takeaway for me in my research proposal is that the world of problems and hardships service members experience after reintegrating efforts into civilian lives has been more than adequately documented. What has not been done with sufficient intent and action is that transition assistance is uneven, too late and too "one size". The majority of supporting efforts seems to be reactive and take effect after the fact. The programs are too weak and fragmented. There needs to be a strong, solid and meaningful approach at supporting these individuals and their anticipated needs prior to exiting the military. There has to be a viable and visible increased approach at better valuing the lives of our service members. This would help to confirm the military's acknowledgement of common hardships service members' experience, in turn helping to substantially reduce or even eliminate the stigma of receiving or needing mental health support services. Such systemic changes need to be made aware of on a macro level. I have also learned to better understand a well constructed literature review, where "Yegidis, B. L. (2018)" shares that its' purpose is to help the reader navigate through the existing and relevant knowledge, while generating conclusions and evaluations.
I feel my proposed research would inform social work practice by highlighting the need to represent those whose needs are still not being met, specifically veterans who continue to experience mental health trauma, substance abuse issues and suicides directly related to these services not adequately rendered in a timely fashion. This demands social worker representation at a macro level to make the necessary systemic changes and encourage change and action.
The limitations of my proposed study could be in the form of accessibility to a population of service members who either may not have direct access to participating in studies, questionnaires and surveys to further support the findings.
