Major Depressive Disorder - DSM-5-TR Criteria

A. Major Depressive Episode

Five (or more) of the following symptoms present during the same 2-week period, representing a change from previous functioning.

At least one symptom must be (1) depressed mood or (2) loss of interest/pleasure.

Depressed mood most of the day, nearly every day

Markedly diminished interest or pleasure in activities (anhedonia)

Significant weight change or appetite disturbance

Insomnia or hypersomnia

Psychomotor agitation or retardation (observable)

Fatigue or loss of energy

Feelings of worthlessness or excessive/inappropriate guilt

Diminished concentration or indecisiveness

Recurrent thoughts of death or suicidal ideation/behavior

B. Distress or Impairment

Symptoms cause clinically significant distress or impairment in functioning.

C. Exclusion: Substances/Medical

Not attributable to substances or another medical condition.

D. Exclusion: Other Psychotic Disorders

Not better explained by schizophrenia spectrum or other psychotic disorders.

E. No Manic/Hypomanic History

No history of manic or hypomanic episode (unless substance/medical-induced).
