Discussion or overview of literature

Literature review:

WHAT IS A LITERATURE REVIEW?

A literature review is a discussion or overview of literature (previous studies) on a particular subject area, or theory related to your research question (s). It may provide background for a larger work, or it may stand on its own. An effective literature review analyzes, evaluates and synthesizes information in an organized format identifying key themes, trends or issues in literature that connect your sources together.

HOW IS IT DIFFERENT FROM A RESEARCH PAPER?

The focus of a research paper is to develop a new argument. In a research paper, the literature review is one of its parts and is used as a foundation and as support for a new insight that you contribute. The focus of a literature review, however, is to summarize and synthesize the arguments and ideas of others without adding new contributions.
