I believe society has a moral obligation to equally consider the interests of all sentient beings because sentience the ability to experience pain, pleasure, and suffering is the basis for moral consideration. According to Singer (1989), the principle of equal consideration of interests means that similar interests deserve equal moral weight, regardless of whether they belong to humans or animals. Singer argues that speciesism, or giving greater moral value to humans simply because they are human, is ethically comparable to other forms of discrimination. In The Moral Status of Animals, Singer (n.d.) explains that because animals are capable of suffering, their interests should not be ignored in ethical decision-making. From a utilitarian perspective, society should strive to maximize well-being while minimizing suffering for all sentient beings. When animal experimentation is used to develop new drugs that can save human lives, I believe sentience should remain a key ethical consideration. Although I believe some animal research may be morally justified when there are no effective alternatives and the potential to save many lives is significant, researchers have a moral responsibility to reduce animal suffering as much as possible. Singer (1989) argues that the suffering of animals should not be discounted simply because they are members of another species. Therefore, ethical cost-benefit analysis should carefully weigh the benefits of medical advances against the harm caused to sentient animals, while promoting alternatives to animal testing whenever possible.
