Problem

I. Gerontologists consider age to be a social construct. Explain to me what a social construct is and provide 2 examples. How and why is age a social construct? How do the 4 "types" of aging (chronological, social. psychological, biological) discussed in class fit into this discussion?

II. Tell me the difference between a Micro theory and a Macro theory. Discuss the 3 Theoretical Perspectives (Conflict, Functionalism, Interactionism) used by Gerontologists and explain each one. Give examples.

III. Define and make connections between stereotype, discrimination, and prejudice. How do these relate to elderly in particular? What are the different 'Types" of stereotypes? Provide examples.

IV. Explain the importance of physical and mental well-being as we age. How does one "age well"? Please include a discussion on the individual and societal level.

V. Discuss Ageism. What is it, what are some root causes, and what are the consequences of ageism for society and the individual?
