Problem:
Acknowledge and respond to the following in 75 words or more: Power is the capacity to shape one's circumstances with confidence, access, and choice while maintaining dignity, autonomy, and self-determination. It is not authority or control over others, but the ability to influence decisions, access opportunities, and assert one's voice in environments that may otherwise limit it. Power includes internal elements such as self-efficacy and identity, as well as external elements like resources, representation, and institutional support. When individuals experience powerlessness, it can be psychologically painful, leading them to seek ways to regain control either through healthy self-development and mastery or, at times, through harmful behaviors that diminish others (Diller, 2021). True empowerment, therefore, is rooted in growth and equity rather than domination. As a social worker, supporting non-White clientele in becoming empowered requires recognizing how systems distribute power unevenly. Dombrowski (2020) explains that Western-based power structures often provide resources to those who align with dominant norms while restricting access for those who do not. This means empowerment involves helping clients navigate systems that may not have been designed with them in mind. I can do this by providing access to information, advocating for equitable resources, validating lived experiences of racism or marginalization, and strengthening clients' confidence in their own decision.
