Stiff person syndrome is when the body begins to tense up typically starting with the abdomen. I know that it is a neuro autoimmune disorder. People with stiff person syndrome can sometimes have other diagnoses that occur before getting diagnosed with SPS due it presenting like other autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis (May Clinic, 2025).

Discuss the nursing assessment priorities for a patient with SPS. What symptoms or complications should the nurse monitor closely, and why? Need Assignment Help?

Some important nursing priorities are always airway, breathing, and circulation. Symptoms that can raise concern quickly is the signs of a blood clot. Another symptom that the nurse will have to manage frequently is pain and spasms. Making sure you are assessing your patient for these things to keep them comfortable will be key in treatment. Another helpful thing if you are seeing the patient in a long term situation is helping them to realize their triggers so they can be avoided as much as possible. Patient safety is always a priority.

Consider the psychosocial implications of living with a rare, chronic condition like SPS. What nursing interventions or resources would support a patient's mental health and coping strategies?

The psychosocial implications could be really difficult for someone living with SPS because it is a very life altering disease. It unfortunately is progressive and there is no cure so helping a patient to cope and understand that will help them adhere better to a treatment plan as well as cope with the diagnosis and changes ahead. A good resource for a patient with a new life altering diagnosis is going to be the care manager as well as the social worker. When nursing in a hospital you have so many resources readily available to you and it can really help patients if you can get them in contact with the proper people as quickly as possible. Another resource would be physical therapy and maybe even a family life specialist to help them transition home and help with any future changes they may be curious about or just unsure about moving forward.

Review one evidence-based treatment option for SPS (e.g., benzodiazepines, IVIG, immunotherapy, or physical therapy). What is the mechanism of action, and how would you explain this treatment to a patient at the BSN level of practice?

IVIG or intravenous immunoglobulin can be used to help treat patients with SPS by helping to suppress the autoimmune response within a patient. It aids in decreasing the antibodies that are present and causing the stiff person syndrome symptoms (Kaeberlein, 2025). This is huge because it can help alleviate the symptoms and allow for a person to resume their daily activities such as housework or even something as simple as walking unassisted. There are different categories of SPS and classical stiff person syndrome is the most studied using the IVIG treatments. There has been significant progress shown in the few studies that they have done though with long term positive outcomes for these patients. It has helped with gait, posture, and balance (Kaeberlein, 2025).
